Sleepyhead/Better Things 7"

Description

Straight out of Boston comes Passion Pit, the next great American band to melt your speakers in 2008. Mixing Go Team!-esque samples with hooky MGMT synths and frontman Michael Angelakos' distinct falsetto'd vocals, this double A-side release is a special one indeed. "Sleepyhead" is an enchanted forest fire that's coming to burn your town to cinders, all squiggling synths and shouty vocals, while "Better Things" is a classic end of summer anthem-in-waiting, that last burst of breezy euphoria before reality sets in and it's back to the 9-to-5. Obsessions/Mowgli's Road 7"

Obsessions/Mowgli's Road 7"

Description

Marina Diamondis is a rare talent, melding the theatrically lavish vocal and orchestral flourishes of Kate Bush with the wonderful pop eccentricity of everyone from Cyndi Lauper to the Scissor Sisters. This is a bold and ambitious record from someone so young, and one that you'll be hearing many times in the coming year. "Obsessions" is her dramatic masterwork, while "Mowgli's Road" is a high intensity, left field pop smash on the AA-side that establishes Marina as a unique talent in the UK's oversaturated singer-songwriter scene and a good bet for indie stardom in '09.

Tuff N Stuff/You Were Young 7"

Tuff N Stuff/You Were Young 7"

Description

Yes Giantess are the next great hope for electronic pop in the US, following in the footsteps of Passion Pit with an even more synthed-out electro sound. Produced by Passion Pit's own Ayad Al-Adhamy at his Bo Flex Music studio, they're unleashing some of the biggest pop jams you'll hear all year. "Tuff 'n Stuff" is their masterwork, leading you in with a deceptively plaintive intro before dropkicking you in the jaw with a metric ton of Ratatat-sized synths and huge pop choruses. "You Were Young" stuns on the AA-side, all spiraling synths, infectious hooks and a gamechanging bridge that sounds like Daft Punk on a sugar high. Yeah, they're pretty much the sonic equivalent of flying down the yellow brick road while its raining ecstasy and skittles, and yeah, you're gonna want to taste this rainbow.

Pieces of You 7"

Pieces of You 7"

Description

A one man pop magician, Max McElligot is the mastermind behind Wolf Gang and this is his debut single as he teeters on the brink of global pop domination. Fused with the grooves of David Byrne and the widescreen soundscapes of Arcade Fire, "Pieces of You" simultaneously possesses a charming, almost Smokey Robinson-esque pop quality. It's a timeless, special record, with an explosive chorus that's one of the year's biggest and a unique rough charm that makes it one of the most endearing tracks we've heard in ages. The flipside sets a different tone in "The Kill," as hospital synths swoon and swirl across the mix and McElligot sings with a dark urgency of life in modern society. Together, the two songs perfectly introduce the eclectic sound that epitomizes Wolf Gang's wonderfully unique approach to pop songwriting. Definitely a band to watch in the months to come.

Billionaires 7"

Billionaires 7"

Description

Having cut his teeth in the London indie scene as the bassist and keyboardist in Metronomy, Your Twenties frontman Gabriel Stebbing recently left his original band to focus on his new project full time, and the results have been nothing short of brilliant. Debut single "Caught Wheel" dropped last fall to rapturous praise and quickly flew off the shelves and "Billionaires" - their next offering and first on Neon Gold - looks primed to do the same. Produced by the legendary Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths), "Billionaires" soars on the wings of sunny ooh-ooh-oohs and big, driving guitars that add up to the perfect soundtrack to a classic American summer. Your Twenties have discovered the formula for the feelgood anthem of the year and this is it.

Learnalilgivinanlovin 7"

Learnalilgivinanlovin 7"

Description

rn

Gotye is one of our favorite artists of all time and one of the reasons we're even messing about in this whole music biz thing in the first place, so we're thrilled to release a very special, very limited edition 7" run of his smash hit "Learnalilgivinanlovin" that will step out as his first ever physical release in the US. The track's already been released in other territories but still has nowhere near the exposure it deserves, so sweetening the deal for our international customers is a brilliant remix from Passion Pit, whose debut 7" single "Sleepyhead"/"Better Things" was the first record ever to brandish the Neon Gold logo on its sleeve. "Learnalilgivinanlovin" exudes a vibrant versatility and comes together like a classic Motown hit produced with Phil Spector's widescreen sunshine visors on, an ebullient blend of racing drums, triumphant horns, and the sweetest soul falsetto you've never heard. A huge summer anthem in his adopted home of Australia, it grooves along on a timeless instrumental with a breezy melody that's the perfect soundtrack to the classic urban summer we've been dreaming of, where kids while away hot afternoons chasing the ice cream truck down the street and dancing around in the cool relief of fire hydrant showers. Passion Pit keep that elusive summer dream alive on the B-side with an exclusive remix.

The Ruins 7"

Description

A marked departure from the party anthems that comprised Yes Giantess' debut single, "The Ruins" veers towards the other end of the pop spectrum, all dark, brooding synths and massive rumbling bass riffs. Fresh off his work as the principle producer on Ellie Goulding's hotly-anticipated debut album, Starsmith is at the reigns on the production here, turning in more of his signature synth wizardy and chart-ready dance beats. The flipside featurs "Call My Name", a babymaking jam for all the ladies out there, as frontman Jan Rosenfeld bumps and grinds like the R&B lothario he was born to be. Together they mark a distinct evolution for the band and an exciting taste of what's to come for Yes Giantess in 2010.

Description

We're pretty sure Penguin Prison is the best thing to happen to electronic music since electricity itself, so to say we're thrilled to be bringing his next single out on Neon Gold in March would be a significant understatement. His album is shaping to be all kinds of amazing, and this next single offers an exciting taste of things to come. Another piping hot AA-side release, it's out March 22nd featuring "The Worse It Gets" and "Something I'm Not", both a serious departure from the lighthearted pop fare of his debut and an accurate indicator of the eclectic diversity that runs wild through his forthcoming debut LP. "The Worse It Gets" comes off like an incredible pop smash from MJ's most paranoid phase, while "Something I'm Not" lights up the flipside with a speaker-busting onslaught of immense bass sounds and ominous synths. Together, they comprise one of the more exciting releases Neon Gold has ever brought out, get it while it's hot folks.

The last time we checked in with The Knocks they were igniting dancefloors across the nation with their debut single "Blackout", and now they're back with their amazing second offering, "Make It Better", out on Neon Gold this month. Living In America/Jesus 7"

Living In America/Jesus 7"

Description

Dom has been burning up stereos all summer long with his star-spangled banger "Living In America", and with the buzz around him beginning to carry overseas, his debut international single arrives this month on Neon Gold. In association with Burning Mill Records - who released Dom's amazing debut Sun Bronzed Greek Gods EP from which the two tracks on the 7" are culled - we'll be bringing Dom's debut release beyond US borders, complete with brilliant AA-side and EP standout "Jesus" on the flipside. Standing in stark contrast to the synth-drenched, tongue-in-cheek patriotism of "Living In America", "Jesus" is a less ironic affair that finds Dom longing for the ephemeral pleasures of youth - ecstasy and basement parties, make-outs at the movies and young love - over lo-fi guitars and timid keys riffs. Like the more earnest younger cousin to the sterephonic bombast of "Living In America", "Jesus" shows off Dom's impressive versatility and provides a surprisingly brilliant compliment to it's All-American counterpart on this very special AA-side release.

Young Blood 7"

Description

Unquestionably the hottest new band of the year and architects of the essential summer anthem 2010 has been waiting for, The Naked & Famous emerge from Down Under as New Zealand's next (first?) great hope for international pop stardom. Like Passion Pit if they fucked with guitars and had an anthem-of-a-generation like "Kids" or "Sweet Disposition" in their arsenal, the song is a breath of fresh air, a wistful celebration of the ephemeral pleasures of youth. Built around an amazing central riff of heavily-affected guitars, the song soars on the wings of singer Alisa Xayalith's urgent vocals, their breathless innocence juxtaposed sharply against the ominous rumble of the overdriven bass that lies beneath the song's surface.

Give Me A Break 12"

Description

We've been driving the Starsmith bandwagon for as long as we can remember, so it's with great pleasure that we finally announce his hotly-anticipated debut solo single on Neon Gold, coming this October 18th. Two sides of scorching club electro, his debut 12" features lead track "Give Me A Break", a massive, club-swallowing anthem built around a huge Richie Family sample (from their track of the same name) that would have lit the clubs up all summer long had it seen a release six months ago. On the flipside we've got "Knuckleduster", an aggressive instrumental that provides the perfect compliment to it's A-side counterpart. Together they're the perfect teaser for his more vocal-based and pop-oriented solo work, set to drop in the new year with his debut album as he readies his debut album for release in 2011.

Rescue Song 7"

Description

A significant departure from the roaring guitars of debut single "Angel", Mr. Little Jeans returns with "Rescue Song". Her most intimate track yet, it's all soft tones and wintry comforts as the Norwegian chanteuse draws the listener to safety with her gentle, honey-throated vocals. It's been the subject of lofty praise as the definitive fan favorite from day one, and it's the perfect track to bundle up with by the fire as the winter months arrive and the first snowfall drifts silently by the window. On the flipside is "Valentine", another heartfelt ballad that rides galloping percussion through a thick fog of dreary industrial synths towards one of the strongest choruses of the young singer's career. Together they compliment each other brilliantly, coming together in perfect harmony as the quintessential double A-side single and yet another reason why Mr. Little Jeans should be all over your radar are as one of the most hotly-tipped artists for 2011.

Description

2010 has been a big year for Neon Gold replete with releases were extremely proud of, so it's fitting we bring the year to a close with the third single from an artist who has quickly become one of our flagship acts, the inimitable Penguin Prison. "Golden Train" was the first song we ever heard from the Penguin and remains one of his most essential tracks to date, coming off like Justin Timberlake fronting a DFA track, all heaven-sent vocals and Penguin's signature churning synths. It's absolutely massive, and the track we've been waiting to unleash on the world since first crossing paths with him nearly 18 months ago. A unique beast, it opens with a sparse vocal and synth arrangement and builds slowly throughout, evolving steadily as more and more layers are added to the mix until the song reaches a triumphant climax of spiraling synths and Penguin's falsetto'd vox by its conclusion. One of our absolute favorite tracks of the year, it's just another reason Penguin's forthcoming debut album should sit high atop your most anticipated albums of 2011 list... song's like this don't happen all the time. Description

Turning heads over the last few months with their infectious Ibiza-channeling pop tracks, Polarsets are quickly proving that they're masters of crafting hip-shaking island vibes with the best of them and new single Morning/Sunset is the perfect embodiment of this. On the A-side, "Morning" serves as a wake-up call to all the conservative indie pop bands out there - from the first cowbell strike, the single moves like a flashdance assembly line that picks up tropical steam with each added high hat and steel drum. It's Around You/Blood On Blood 7"

It's Around You/Blood On Blood 7"

Description

Like a buddy cop duo whose lethal weapon is their interminable arsenal of experimental pop hooks, ANR are truly Miami's finest. Take Exhibit A-side: "It's Around You". The radio filter intro foreshadows the immortal feeling you get when the synths surges drop nearly a minute in and the track engulfs you in a shimmering galaxy of anthemic choral shouts and pop majesty. Each humming pulse is like lightning in a bottle until drum layers and vocal layers are added and the chorus ultimately crashes into beautiful oblivion. It's strangely uplifting despite the minor chords and elegiac harmonies, perhaps thanks to the soft xylophone drops and a masterfully orchestrated brass section. As the moody trombones are counterbalanced by the kind of adulatory trumpets Mark Ronson would be proud of, ANR are guilty of squashing your conscience and unleashing your id in their bloodthirsty wake. On the flip there's Exhibit AA-side: "Blood On Blood", a schizophrenic orchestral masterpiece mixed by none other than Ben Allen himself, fresh off studio dalliances with Animal Collective and Reptar. Preorder is available now, let this into your heart and we promise you it will be one of your favorite singles of 2011 when it drops August 29th.

Dreamers 7"

Dreamers 7"

Description

"Dreamers" opens innocuously enough, as the crescendo emerges gradually from the ominous mists of the intro, before the synths drop with the full centripetal force of a rollercoaster, swooping in and around staccato guitar picks and frontman Paul Hammer's ethereal vocals. Then at the chorus, it's lady vocalist Deidre Muro's turn, as the synths let up and give her center stage before returning with all the emotional gravity of a thousand heartbreaks in the second verse. It all reaches a fever pitch in the middle eight, as this palpable combination of dreamweaving harmonies, self-assured handclaps, and textured synths come together to play out like a slow-burning cinematic threesome. From there, "Dreamers" builds and builds like a stairway to synth heaven and once you've reached the top, there's just no turning back. It's a timeless slice of ethereal pop brilliance and one of our absolute favorite tracks of the year, and we hope it'll be yours too. Description

The Sound of Arrows are simultaneously the most impressive and exciting thing to happen to pop music in recent memory, so it's with great pleasure that we announce our next release, a special edition AA-side 12" celebrating our two favorite cuts from the album, "Wonders" and Conquest". All pulsing, skyscraping synths and bittersweet vocals, "Wonders" simmers in a magic cauldron of nostalgia, as Stefan Storm's heart-piercing refrain lights up the mic and stardust showers from the ceiling like confetti. Then it's time for "Conquest" to shine, turning in the performance of a lifetime in the record's best supporting single role. Coming off like Royksopp on a sugar high, "Conquest" churns along as red velvet synths course through your veins and the duo rally around a triumphant chorus for the ages on what might just be our favorite track of theirs yet. Youth/Home 7"

Youth/Home 7"

Description

Our AA-side debut single "Youth"/"Home" from the lovely Foxes celebrates our 30th release and stands out as one of our absolute strongest to date. Carrying on the torch for empowered female pop from Neon Gold alums Marina & The Diamonds and Ellie Goulding, Foxes' debut 7" is a supercharged one-two punch with "Youth" leading the way and "Home" driving things home on the flip. Loui Rose Allen (the one they call Foxes) has the piercing voice of an angel with an arrow lodged in her heart, and the rise and fall of the A-side's dynastic production mirrors our female lead's coming of age perfectly at the rupturous breakdown. On the AA-side, "Home" has a certain Chairlift-ed charm about it, opening like an unassuming lullaby that skips the caterpillar stage altogether and goes from zero to butterfly in barely a minute. Sunsick 7"

Sunsick 7"

Description

It's with great pleasure that we welcome Fort Lean to the Neon Gold family with the release of their new single "Sunsick". The four piece have an uncanny knack for escapist summer anthems, a point underscored on the A-side as a waterfall of cascading drums and sweeping guitars draw you in and an armed-to-the-teeth bassline pumps seratonin through your veins. On the flip, "The Precinct" begins as a slow-burning lament and grows into a staggering climax, filled to the brim with emotional fortitude and rousing harmonies. Together the tracks pack one hell of a one-two punch and make you pine for a getaway, the destination: irrelevant. If The Walkmen were fronted by the long lost son of Iggy Pop and raised on a sundrenched beach, you'd have a blurry outline of Fort Lean. We're here to talk about the debut EP, both a primer for what's to come and a continued study in perfecting the 21st century pop anthem. You already know the picture-perfect "We Got It Wrong", a seductive thief in the night that steals your breath away from your singing-along lips on the opening track. This segues into a one-two knockout of "This Old House Is Gone" and "All Eyes On You",the two trascendent summer staples that sparked this whole not-so-secret affair. Then it's "Before The Dive" coming out of nowhere as yet another single-worthy smash to remember, bursting at the seams with infectious piano chords, overachieving hooks and handholding harmonies. "Paper Heart" brings us to the twilight of the EP as it unfolds into an ethereal catharsis, before the blissful 80's pop of curtain call ballad "Closer Than This" marks the EP's conclusion, an ellipsis before the exclamation point of St. L's debut album later this year. The EP drops digitally Mrch 6th, with the physical 10" vinyl release to follow on March 27th. Mark your calendars, friends, and head over to the Neon Gold Shop to preorder your vinyl NOW.

Before The Dive 7"

Before The Dive 7"

Vinyl

Description

We've got a bottomless well of praise to shower upon St. Lucia, and with that in mind we're stoked to bring you his next 7" as we wrap up the EP campaign and turn all eyes on his debut album. Leading off the 7" is EP standout and new single, "Before The Dive", a weather-agnostic pop anthem that makes it feel like Christmas morning every morning. Jean's powerstorming piano progression jolts you awake like a brisk reality check, as you join him on the precipice of greatness and stare into the sublime oblivion. Then there's that explosive "when it rains, it pours" chorus, with self-sufficient harmonies and everlasting sunshine for days. You take the jump with him and feel your fears ebb away like washing up on a private beach in another galaxy. On the flip, London mysteriosos D-E-W-L challenge St. L's anthemic "All Eyes On You" to a space age standoff in an epic pop noir reimagining. The Before The Dive 7" arrives on Neon Gold June 12th, but preorder is available now.

Warrior EP 7"

Warrior EP 7"

Description

Foxes (our girl Loui Rose Allen) has been churning out effortless hits like butter for the better part of the last year, so it's with the great pleasure that we announce our next release with her, the three track Warrior EP. We've already hinted at the thunder-stealing AA-side's prime cuts in the empire-toppling "White Coats" and anthem-in-waiting demo "Let Go For Tonight", but it's EP title track "Warrior" that'll be leading the charge on the A-side. With a lovesick power surge of Loui's larger-than-life vocals and enough riotous coming-of-age inertia to move mountains, "Warrior" is perhaps her biggest offering yet. This dovetails beautifully into "White Coats", an adrenaline rush of dystopian pop whose merits have already been preached from the mountaintops in these very pages. "Let Go For Tonight" rounds things out, a shining demo of boundless potential that has all the makings of a radio smash once a finished version is ready for unleashing. The Warrior 7" hits shops July 9th.

Yo Yo" 7"

Yo Yo" 7"

Description

Former west coasters now living in Brooklyn, the Morning Benders re-emerged earlier this year as the synth-fueled POP ETC, taking their already sun-blessed melodies to a whole new level of pop brilliance. So we're thrilled to be teaming up with Rough Trade to roll out the "YoYo" 7" on Neon Gold later this month. "YoYo" shines and stuns from the very first synth drop, like the ‘80s love child of Yes Giantess and Chromeo, complete with an auto-tuned spoken word bridge and some of the fiercest hooks we've ever heard this side of Top 40 radio. On the flip, mixtape highlight “Hungry Like A Wolf” provides the perfect counterpart to the breezy bliss of “YoYo” - all ravenous synths and skyscraping choruses - and together, they can brighten up any day of the year. The physical release drops July 31st, but preorder is now available HERE. Own a piece of the heat.

Forever EP

Forever EP

Description

The everlasting tryst of the Forever EP kicks off with "Better Off" on the A-side, a harmony-fueled romp around combustible melodies and flammable feelings. "Forever" is up next as the sterling single of the bunch, a truly anthemic headrush best described as the precocious lovechild of Fleetwood Mac and Destiny's Child. Leading off the B-side is live favorite "Go Slow", a heatseeking slow-burner that catalyzes all our fleeting reveries into a singular emotion. And rounding out the vinyl release is Dan Lissvik's balearic nightcap remix of "Forever". Basically, it's a California dream come true.  Sold Out

Don't Save Me 7"

Don't Save Me 7"

Description

The sisters HAIM have taken both sides of the Atlantic by storm this year, and the buzz looks set to reach critical mass with the release of their new AA-side single "Don't Save Me" / "Send Me Down", out December 10th on Neon Gold. From the opening drum kick on "Don't Save Me", you're swept away by a coastal groove that sparks and skylarks on a wave of pure emotion. Then the vocals drop in piping hot, melting on your tongue with the vicissitude of a thousand addictions, and the rest is history. On the flip, "Send Me Down" is a dropkick to the face of unbridled estrogen and adrenaline in the same master rush, all criss-crossing hopscotch acoustics and butterscotch melodies, not to mention a healthy dose of space horns that thrusts the otherwise timeless songwriting headfirst into the future. Limited to only 300 copies in the US, this one will go fast, so get your preorder in while you still can. Your New Beloved / Dying To Start Again 7"

Your New Beloved / Dying To Start Again 7"

Description

We've gotten to know Lovelife very well over the past couple years since they shore-ditched London and moved to Brooklyn to write the next great American tragedy. So we're over the moon to announce our next 7" release from the men in black, "Your New Beloved" / "Dying to Start Again", a double-trouble bundle of sinister pop that encompasses our most macabre daydreams and darkest nightvisions. Lead single "Your New Beloved" is one of our absolute favorite songs of 2013 and sounds like electronic gospel from the distant future, as Lee Newell's yearning voice is filtered through a black-and-white vocoder over an industrial backdrop of dystopian synths. The flipside, "Dying to Start Again", is a more upbeat, brass-laden number that brings your old flame back to life like a mood ring flickering between shades of grey. The whole package drops on June 17th with preorder available now.
